  • 1st January New Year's Day.

  • 21st February Shaheed Day. International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by UNESCO's General Conference in November 1999. The International Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. On 16 May 2007, by resolution 61/266, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages, to promote unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism. The 21st of February is of special significance to the people of Bangladesh. Each year, on this date, the country commemorates International Mother Language Day in recognition of the preservation of Bangla as the official language of Bangladesh. At the request of the people of Bangladesh and after investigating the matter, UNESCO declared the 21st of February each year to be International Mother Language Day on a world-wide scale among United Nations member countries.  

  • 26th March Independence and National Day. The Bangladesh Liberation War (Bengali: Muktijuddho) was an armed conflict pitting West Pakistan against East Pakistan (two halves of one country) and India, that resulted in the secession of East Pakistan as the independent nation of Bangladesh. The war broke out on 26 March 1971 as army units directed by West Pakistan launched a military operation in East Pakistan against Bengali civilians, students, intelligentsia, and armed personnel who were demanding separation from West Pakistan.



  • 14th April Bengali Solar New Year (This can vary +/- 1 day) Bengali New Year, Nôbobôrsho or Pohela Boishakh or Pôhela Boishakh or Pôela Boishakh or Poila Boishakh, is the first day of the Bengali calendar, celebrated in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, and in Bengali communities in Assam and Tripura. Pohela Boishakh connects all ethnic Bengalis irrespective of religious and regional differences.It falls on April 14 or April 15 of the Gregorian calendar depending on the use of the new amended or the old Bengali calendar respectively.In Bangladesh, it is celebrated on April 14 th according to the official amended calendar designed by the Bangla Academy. In Bangladesh, Pohela Boishakh is a national holiday and in West Bengal and Assam it is a public holiday. The Hindu solar calendar based on the Surya Siddhanta commences in mid-April of the Gregorian year.

  • 1st May Labour Day.

  • 1st Monday in July Bank Holiday.

  • 15th August National Mourning Day. The nation will pay homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On this day in 1975, Bangabandhu along with almost all the members of his family embraced martyrdom at the hands of assassins at his Dhanmondi residence. In a pre-dawn attack by a group of army officers, Bangabandhu and the members of his family except two daughters - Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana - were killed by bullets fired by the assassins.  


  • 7th November National Revolution Day (This day depends on which party is in power) In Bangladesh, November 7 is celebrated as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day. This commemorates the 1975 uprising formed by people and soldiers. The uprising, led by Colonel Abu Taher, ended the three day coup organised by General Khaled Mosharraf. It also helped put General Ziaur Rahman, founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in power.  

  • 16th December Victory Day (This day depends on which party is in power) (Bengali: Bijôe Dibôsh). On this day in 1971, the Pakistani Army surrendered to the Indo-Bangladeshi High Command in Dhaka, ending the 9 month-long Bangladesh liberation war and 1971 Bangladesh atrocities. General AAK Niazi, the Commanding officer of Pakistan Army forces located in East Pakistan, surrendered his forces to Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, the Allied forces commander. India also commemorates victory over Pakistan on the same day in 1971 on Vijay Diwas.
